Abstract: |
In earlier of 1990s, a young Vietnamese woman, Tran thi Lanh coordinated a group of students at her PHD department in Hanoi University, later became one of NGOs in January 1994 inVietnam. On the basis of her admiration for the ethnic minority women whom she had met during an extensive journey of discovery over 16 different provinces of Vietnam, she called her NGO ‘Toward Ethnic Women’. Together with support from family and friends and a small groups of students whom she was supervising during her research for her PhD, Tran thi Lanh developed TEW into the most dynamic, progressive and respected organization working for ethnic minority peoples in the Mekong region. On the basis of her own theory of Biological Human Ecology, TEW worked to preserve Nature through working to preserving the original stewards of Nature - the indigenous ethnic minority people of the Mekong region. TEW soon gave rise to sister organizations: the centre for Human Ecology Studies of Highlands (CHESH) in 1999, the Centre for Indigenous Knowledge Research and Development (CIRD) in 2000, and TEW and CIRD merged into the Social Policy Ecology Research Institute (SPERI) in 2005 under the enduring logo Nurturing Nature. This book traces the very personal story of TEWs and Tran Thi Lanh’s journey. It is written as a tribute to Tran thi Lanh by someone from a very different background, but who for many years was privileged to share her journey.
