| Abstract: |
To bring more scientific attention to Biological Human Ecology Theory (BHE), SPERI and its partner MECO-ECOTRA embarked on an intensive BHE and Ethnobotany Research project with indigenous healers in the Mekong region. The research, which took place between August 2012 and August 2013, describes the uses of native plant species by herbal healers from ethnic minority groups in Vietnam and Laos, and the livelihood and biodiversity implications of those uses. It demonstrates the mutual relations between the spiritual, ethnical, cultural, socio-economic, political, and environmental aspects of the local systems as per the Biological Human Ecology Theory. The overall goal of the research has been to demonstrate to governments in the Mekong region the value of retaining indigenous ethnic minority peoples in their traditional lands as the natural protectors of forests and preservers of biodiversity. It is the first in a series of research projects in which SPERI wishes to extend to other communities following the model piloted here.
