During the period from 1997 to 2011, SPERI has conducted case studies in 13 communities of ethnic groups in
Quang Binh province such as the
Ma Lieng in Lam Hoa and Thanh Hoa communes, Kinh (Vietnamese) in Hoa Son, Hoa Phuc, Ngu Hoa, Cao Quang and Kim Hoa communes in
Tuyen Hoa district, the Khua, Ruc, Sach,
May and Kinh ethnic groups in Dan Hoa, Thuong Hoa communes in
Minh Hoa district, Kinh in Lam Trach, Xuan Trach,
A Rem and
Ma Coong ethnic groups in Thuong Trach commune,
Bo Trach district.
Landmarks
1997 - 1999: Case studies in Quang Binh were conducted by the Office of Center for Indigenous Knowledge Research and Development (
CIRD) under Towards Ethnic Women (TEW) - the predecessor of SPERI.
2000: the Office of Center for Indigenous Knowledge Research and Development (CIRD) became indeppendent registered as a Scientific Technology Organization of Vietnam Union of Scientific Technology Assocation (
VUSTA).
Since 2001: CIRD in alliance with SPERI has conducted activities which are in line with the direction of Mekong Ethnic Minority Community Networking and Eco-Trading (MECO-ECOTRA).
The primary concerns of above case studies relate to social capital and civil society promotion via key farmer's networks, interest clubs, community based organization and institution, local knowledge in sustainable agriculture, animal husbandry, land rights and livelihood security, cultural identity preservation and natural resource usage and management.
