Since 1999, SPERI has conducted case studies in 96 villages of different ethnic groups such as Hmong, Yao, Tay, Nung, Thu Lao in Bac Ha, Si Ma Cai, Sa Pa and Bat Xat districts, Lao Cai province.

The primary concerns of case studies related to community rights to forest and land, customary law in natural resources management, local knowledge in herbal medicine for community health care, traditional handicraft textile, ecological farming, security of local livelihoods and bio-cultural diversity, traditional civil society promotion via key farmer networking, ethnic minority youth empowerment and Farmer's Field School.

The above case studies are supported by ICCO - the Netherlands, NPA - Norway, Caritas-France, and Brot/BMZ and ESP-Germany.
